Planning submission for Portal House

Today, KSS submitted plans to Kent County Council to build a new three storey teaching block and sports hall together with the restoration of the original Eighteenth Century Portal House which is located to the east of Dover, within the small coastal area of St Margaret’s at Cliffe.

The new building has been designed as two volumes; a simple, double-pitched timber box contains general and specialist classrooms and sits above a brick level enclosing administration, support and staff spaces alongside a sports hall set into the sloping landscape. The proportion and massing is reminiscent of local and Kent vernacular buildings, whilst simple and modern details create a distinct contemporary identity for the new building.

The overall site masterplan takes a modest approach, proposing a select number of differing types of external space which provide diverse learning, teaching and recreational environments which enforce the nurturing and caring nature of Portal House School. The internal environment is simple but inspiring and gives a quality background to the teaching and learning whilst maintaining an excellent level of passive supervision.

Our proposals provide a fresh, coherent and consolidated campus that is ready to take on the challenges of 21st Century education, whilst meeting the specific needs of its pupils.
