The value of community at MIPIM

Design for everyone and get to know your neighbours instilled Adora Svitak as she officially opened this years MIPIM in the Grand Auditorium. Real estate is after all about people and even before the opening keynote ‘community’ was the word on everyone’s lips at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes.

Creating valuable communities for our clients, making sure our end users are part of a community and actively promoting the industry community in which we work. Stand out speeches explained how heritage draws people to visit our countries, how the public sector is stepping up to fill the housing gap, how sport regenerates and unites neighbourhoods and how even large cities pull together in times of crisis – what is a city if not its people?

The conference spoke of cities not countries becoming the power wealth of the future and this was clear to see visually at MIPIM just by the sheer number of UK city stands and the size of the London Stand in a prime sea front location. My highlight of the whole week was just being able to tour the UK in a day or even a few hours to catch up with all of the people we are working with which could only happen in Cannes.

Although personally I’ve been coming to Cannes for over 15 years I’m officially a MIPIM first timer and it is a well looked after group with its own dedicated lounges in the ‘bunker’ and opening reception, helpful guides and free refreshments. Having created the third largest European conference facility to host the worlds leading property market even the local community and the local economy benefits massively from this conference.

With 24,000 industry professionals within the few square miles of Cannes, it’s easy to make connections with new and existing contacts. It’s not necessarily about flying back home with a new project but to first meet someone on Tuesday and by Thursday evening bumped into them a number of times creates an invaluable network that will transfer easily back home.

Along with the well circulated tips to survive MIPIM, all of which I agree with, my additions would be to book either your lunch or dinner appointment as a sit down meal, even sublime French canapés do not make a meal and you need your energy to keep going for the whole week. Don’t carry everything, all you need is plenty of business cards and either sunglasses or an umbrella. Don’t forget to learn as well as network, if you have a pass into the Palais there is a wide range of speakers on lots of subjects with CPD points on offer and where you will meet likeminded people. If you are a MIPIM first timer use everything provided it’s all part of the ticket price and you can invite anyone as a guest as well as immediately growing your network community which is invaluable!
